Design an app for charity

The Vodafone Foundation will be hosting App Aid, a 48-hour hackathon for the best app concept, with monetary prizes to be donated to charities.

The event, which will run from 20-22 September, will require charities to collaborate with developers to come up with an app concept that will make a positive difference in Australia.

Each of the 10 teams will consist of three members from one charity working together with four app developers.

“Our goal with App Aid is to spur mobile innovation to help solve some of the challenges faced by charities and their communities. We are excited to create this melting pot, which brings together entrepreneurs and social entrepreneurs to explore this new technology and its potential,” said the head of the Vodafone Foundation, Demelza Farr, in a press release.

The winning app will receive an AU$30,000 donation to its charity, and the runner-up will win AU$10,000, with Vodafone offering assistance to help promote the winning app’s launch.

Applications open at 9am AEST on 2 August 2012. The competition closes at 5pm AEST 22 August 2012 for charities, and at 5pm AEST on 10 September 2012 for developers.
